LOS ANGELES – Gonzaga women's soccer won its tenth match, winning at Loyola Marymount 2-0, in the regular season finale Saturday. The Bulldogs finished third in the West Coast Conference standings.
The Zags (10-7-2, 6-3-1 West Coast Conference) won their third straight game and ended the regular season winning five out of their last six. GU was unbeaten in six of its last seven, with the lone loss at then-ranked No. 10 Santa Clara, 2-1.
The Bulldogs clinched their seventh 10-win season over the last eight seasons, with the exception being seven wins in the Spring 2020 shortened season. Prior to the last eight seasons, GU had five 10-win seasons in the program's history.
Saturday,
Marissa Garcia had two assists in the GU win, after scoring both goals in Wednesday's win over Pacific. She took a match-high six shots against LMU (11-4-2, 5-2-2 WCC). Her 56
th and 57
th career points rank fifth all-time in program history. The senior is sixth with 12 career assists.
Garcia's first assist of the match came on a
Chelsea Le goal in the 29
th minute. Le shot an impressive curling shot to the far post from outside the box. It was her sixth goal of the season, but her five goals in conference play ranked third in the league.
In the 38
th minute,
Katelyn Rigg headed in a cross for her fifth goal of the season. Garcia and
Paige Alexander were credited with assists. Alexander finished the regular season with six goals, six assists, and a team-high 18 points. Her 18 points ranked sixth in the WCC.
Gonzaga's
Lauren Towne and the Lions' JJ Hoover made four saves each. The Zags outshot Loyola Marymount 21-15, with a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal.
The Bulldogs finished conference play with 19 points in the WCC standings. No. 11 Santa Clara and No. 22 Pepperdine shared the regular season West Coast Conference title with 21 points. The Broncos earned the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament due to the tiebreaker of having a better goal differential in conference play.
