PHILADELPHIA, Penn. – No. 24 Gonzaga men's rowing's top two varsity eights competed on Saturday, racing against other ranked schools at the Schuylkill Invitational.
The morning session began with flights against No. 20 Holy Cross and No. 21 Drexel.
In the regatta's first race, Gonzaga's Varsity 8 rallied to take second place at 5:37.92, barely one second ahead of Drexel (5:38.99). Holy Cross crossed the finish line first at 5:30.42. The second varsity eight's time was 5:42.41 in their opening flight, following Drexel (5:36.51) and Holy Cross (5:36.78), who also had a photo finish.
"Great racing in the morning," head coach
Dan Gehn said. "Especially the V8 rowing from behind most of the race and getting past #21 Drexel in the last 500 meters."
Both boats improved on their times in the afternoon session, however, so did their competitors.
The Varsity 8's time of 5:27.94 was just behind Hobart (5:25.56) and No. 18 Temple (5:17.66), while the second eights also had a tight flight. Temple won that race as well at 5:29.04, ahead of Hobart (5:31.81) and Gonzaga (5:35.10)
"The afternoon session, although not as successful, gave us some valued race experience," head coach
Dan Gehn said.

UP NEXT: The Bulldogs host Washington State on Saturday, April 19 at Silver Lake. The Varsity 8 competition will be the Fawley Cup race, with an award presented to the first-place finisher.
