WBB Wins Big Over San Diego, 87-42

Gardner scores 12 points in the win

SPOKANE, Wash. — Gonzaga University (14-6, 6-1 WCC) defeated the University of San Diego (7-13, 1-6 WCC), 87-42, at McCarthey Athletic Center, fueled by 49 bench points and a 41-25 rebounding advantage.

Lauren Whittaker collected 13 rebounds, including 12 on the defensive end, and added three steals. Allie Turner scored 11 points and recorded six assists, contributing two steals. Teryn Gardner made four 3-pointers on her way to a 12-point performance. Jaiden Haile scored 10 points, converting 5 of 6 field goals, and pulled down six rebounds.

The Bulldogs opened the game with a strong offensive performance, highlighted by an early 3-pointer from Ines Bettencourt at 9:29, assisted by Zeryhia Aokuso. Gonzaga continued to build momentum through the first quarter with effective ball movement, recording eight assists on 11 baskets. Taylor Smith and Whittaker contributed key buckets to extend the lead. Despite efforts from San Diego, GU's defense forced three turnovers, limiting the visitors' opportunities. The quarter concluded with Gonzaga leading 25–11.

The Zags took control in the second quarter with a strong 3-point performance, highlighted by Gardner's pair of 3-pointers, the first at 6:04 assisted by Whittaker. GU maintained defensive pressure, including two steals and a key block by Sierra Lichtie. San Diego struggled offensively, converting only three baskets. GU finished the quarter with a 16–7 advantage, leading 41–18 at halftime.

The Bulldogs took control in the third quarter with a strong defensive display, forcing eight turnovers from the Toreros. Turner sparked the offense early with a layup and followed up with a steal and assist on Smith's fast-break layup at 9:24, boosting Gonzaga's lead. The home team's balanced scoring attack saw contributions from several players, including Lichtie and Christabel Osarobo, who closed the quarter with consecutive points to extend the lead.

Gonzaga's defense continued to stifle San Diego, limiting them to just nine points in the quarter. The home team capitalized on their defensive stops, adding points in the paint and from turnovers, and concluded the third with a 22–9 advantage, bringing the overall score to 63–27.

GU's strong performance in the fourth quarter was highlighted by a series of 3-pointers, starting with Turner's long-range shot at 9:46, assisted by Whittaker. Aokuso quickly followed with another 3-pointer at 9:00, with Smith providing the assist, pushing the Bulldogs' lead further. Paige Lofing contributed significantly, scoring a layup and completing a three-point play at 2:57, further extending the lead.

The Zags' defense was effective, allowing only one 3-pointer from the Toreros and limiting their second-chance opportunities. The quarter ended with Gonzaga outscoring San Diego 24–15, securing the victory with a final score of 87–42.

Looking ahead, GU will face Oregon State on Thursday in Corvallis, Oregon. The game is set to tip off at 6 p.m. PT.
