Men's Tennis Completes First Day of ITA Northwest Regionals

Competition Continues Tomorrow With Singles and Doubles Matches
SEATTLE, Wash. – The Gonzaga men's tennis team began competition at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships today, with five Bulldogs punching their tickets to the main singles bracket.
Tom Dunlop, Nicholas Reeves, and Diego Herrera each received a first-round bye for singles qualifying, then won their Round of 32 matches to advance to the main draw. Reeves and Herrera easily dismantled their Portland State and Pacific opponents, respectively, with straight-set wins, while Dunlop dropped the second set against Saint Mary's before rallying to take the third frame, 6-1.
Tristan Hernandez and Noah Pawirodirjo also qualified for the main draw with straight-set wins in the Round of 64. Against their second-round Oregon competitors, the players were triumphant in their three-set matches. Hernandez lost the first set, 5-7, but came back in the next two with 7-6(4) and 6-4 wins. In a similar fashion, Pawirodirjo fell in the first set, but had dominant 6-2, 6-1 wins in sets two and three, respectively. Oscar Rashed is already in the main singles bracket without needing to qualify.
Jay Fairclough had a first-round bye, then lost in the Round of 32 to Portland's Anirudh Nallaparaju, 7-6(4), 6-1.
James Hutchinson and Michael Mitchell both fell in their Round of 64 qualifying matches.
Competition continues through Oct. 20 at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships, hosted by the University of Washington at the Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle, WA. This is one of 13 regional competitions ITA will hold around the U.S. during October, with singles finalists and doubles champions from each region qualifying for the fall NCAA Singles Championship and NCAA Doubles Championship.Â
Participating teams in the Northwest region include California (Berkeley), Gonzaga, Oregon, Pacific, Portland, Portland State, Sacramento State, Saint Mary's, Santa Clara, Stanford, UC Davis, and Washington.
Doubles play will begin tomorrow, along with the main singles draw.
