The Bulldogs Compete in Both Spokane and Eugene This Weekend
SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga men's tennis team began competition in both the PAC-12 Fall Championship and the Duck Invite (taking place in Eugene, Oregon) Friday, dividing players between the events to allow for dual participation.
Beginning with the PAC-12 Fall Championship, only two matches were played by Gonzaga players, and both were singles. Oscar Rashed was bested by his Boise State opponent in three sets after dropping the first, 4-6, rallying to win the second, 6-4, and ultimately falling in the third, 5-7. Tom Dunlop also fell to his San Diego State opponent, 6-2, 6-3.
Moving to the Duck Invite, the Bulldogs participated in doubles and singles play. In doubles, Michael Mitchell and Noah Pawirodirjo defeated Hampus Hagglund and Shun Wakino (PSU) with a commanding 6-2 score. Diego Herrera and Tristan Hernandez did not have the same result and dropped their match against Cade Fernando and Stefan Skobelev (UP), 6-1.
In singles matches, the Bulldogs performed well, ending the day with a 3-1 record. Pawirodirjo and Mitchell both won three-set matches against their Oregon and Portland State opponents, respectively. Pawirodirjo dropped the first set, 1-6, clinched the second in a tiebreak, 7-6(4), and dominated the third, 6-0. Mitchell also dropped his first set, 3-6, but came storming back to win the next two, 6-1, 6-1. Hernandez scored an impressive win, beating his Portland State opponent in straight-sets, 6-3, 6-2. Herrera fell in his match against Portland, 6-2, 6-3.
Competition for both events continues through Sunday. The PAC-12 Fall Championship is hosted at the Bulldog's home tennis facility, the Stevens Center, in Spokane, Washington. Participating teams include Boise State, Gonzaga, San Diego State, and Utah State. The Duck Invite is hosted by the University of Oregon at the Student Tennis Center. Participating teams in that Invite are Gonzaga, Oregon, Portland, and Portland State.
