WBB Comes Up Short at Portland in Overtime, 92-91

Lauren Whittaker had her 17th double double

PORTLAND, Ore. — Gonzaga University (22-9, 14-4 WCC) narrowly fell to the University of Portland (17-13, 11-7 WCC), 92-91, in a tense overtime matchup at the Chiles Center on Saturday. 

Lauren Whittaker led the Zags with 30 points and collected 10 rebounds, marking her second game this season with at least 30 points or more and achieving her 17th double-double. She showcased her efficiency by draining 10 baskets and knocking down nine free throws. Zeryhia Aokuso added 17 points, converting all seven of her free throw attempts and contributing three assists. Allie Turner scored 15 points, posted three assists, and recorded a block, while Taylor Smith contributed 12 points, nine rebounds, and two steals, providing a strong defensive presence.

GU opened the game by capitalizing on opportunities in the paint, scoring 16 points from inside. With strong rebounding and timely assists, Gonzaga managed to stay close, finishing the first quarter trailing Portland 22-20.

Gonzaga shifted momentum in the third quarter with a strong offensive performance, highlighted by Whittaker's layup at 8:24, tying the score at 35. Turner maintained the pressure with a layup and free throw at 7:13, giving GU a slight edge. Aokuso's layup and subsequent free throw at 5:01 further supported Gonzaga's effort, briefly narrowing the gap. Paige Lofing sealed the quarter with a crucial 3-pointer at 0:28, extending the Bulldogs' lead. The quarter ended with Gonzaga ahead, 60–55.

The Bulldogs opened the fourth quarter with a strong start, as Smith scored a jumper assisted by Turner, extending their lead to 62–55. Aokuso's critical free throws at 3:36 and 2:25 helped GU regain and maintain a narrow lead, keeping the game tight in the closing minutes. Portland responded to tie the game at 77-77 in regulation. 

Gonzaga fought to narrow the gap in the final overtime quarter, highlighted by Whittaker's layup at the 30-second mark, bringing the score to within one point. Despite a strong defensive rebound from Smith and a three-pointer by Whittaker with just 2 seconds remaining, the Bulldogs fell short. 

The Zags will head to the WCC Tournament in Las Vegas as the No. 2 seed and open play on Monday, March 9, at 2:30 p.m.
