BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Drew Pedersen scored the game-winning goal in the 76th minute and Chema Preciado recorded a four-save shutout as Gonzaga men's soccer earned a 1-0 road victory over CSU Bakersfield Saturday night at Main Soccer Field.
The win improved Gonzaga to 3-3-1 on the season and marked the Bulldogs' fourth shutout of the year.
CSU Bakersfield applied pressure early, forcing Preciado into four saves within the opening five minutes. The Gonzaga goalkeeper stopped a pair of attempts from Oshea Foster before denying Joey Velasquez and Kevin Estrada to keep the match scoreless.
The Zags settled into the match and generated several opportunities of their own. Damoni McKenna and Nicolas Golesis each put shots on frame in the opening half, while Michael Luande, Isaac Dalhart and Dashiell Stein also recorded attempts. The teams went into halftime tied at 0-0 despite CSU Bakersfield holding an 8-5 advantage in shots.
Gonzaga's defense limited the Roadrunners to just one shot over the final 45 minutes. The Bulldogs eventually broke through at the 75:17 mark when Pedersen found the back of the net off an assist from Stein. The goal was Pedersen's third of the season and ultimately stood as the game-winner.
The Zags protected the one-goal advantage the rest of the way, holding CSU Bakersfield without another shot over the final 31 minutes of action. Senshin Suzuki nearly added an insurance goal in the 87th minute, but his attempt was saved by Diego Ramirez.
Preciado played all 90 minutes in goal and finished with four saves to earn the clean sheet. Gonzaga finished with seven shots, including four on goal, while CSU Bakersfield recorded nine shots with four on target. The Bulldogs held an 8-7 advantage in corner kicks.
Pedersen led the offensive effort with the lone goal on his only shot of the night, while Stein recorded the assist. McKenna, Golesis and Suzuki each added a shot on goal for the Zags.
