Women’s Cross Country Secures Waves Invite Title

Five Zags finish in the Top 10 to win their second straight team title

MALIBU, Calif. – For the second straight week, Gonzaga women's cross country won the team title following a dominant performance at the Waves Invite, hosted by Pepperdine. The meet showcased nine schools, five of which were WCC opponents, and 95 five individual runners and took place at Alumni Park on Pepperdine's campus.

THE RACE
Despite finishing in second place, sophomore Rosina Machu earned one point as the top scorer for the Zags, with individual title winner Johanna Wistokat running unattached. Machu's time of 13:56.0 was nine seconds short of Wistokat's 13:47.6, and her second place finish matches a career-best dating back to the Gonzaga Duals in 2022.

GU runners flooded the finish line in spots six through nine, with freshman Jessica Frydenlund (14:05.4), junior Sadie Tuckwood (14:05.6), senior Alicia Anderson (14:05.8), and freshman Jade Rypkema (14:06.0) all crossing in succession to round out the point scoring.

Frydenlund's finish on Saturday follows a dominant first collegiate race at the Clash of the Inland Northwest last week where she took home first place, etching herself ninth all-time in the Gonzaga 4K record book (13:48.4).

Tuckwood's time on Saturday marks a new personal best in her first race of the 2023 season. Anderson, a senior from Mukilteo, followed up a personal best race in Cheney last week where she finished right behind Frydenlund with another top 10 finish on Saturday.

In her first collegiate race, Rypkema finished ninth to put Gonzaga's team total at 23 points. No GU runner finished lower than 18th on Saturday, with Brittney Hansen (17th, 14:20.7) and Alexi Fogo (18th, 14:21.0) each cracking the Top 20 in a race of 95 individual runners. The Zags finished ahead of WCC foe Saint Mary's (68), UC San Diego (101) and USC (101).
