Men's Soccer Title Hopes Alive

Oct. 29, 1999

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Brian Ching and Jason Kuska each scored two goals as Gonzaga University outlasted the University of San Francisco 5-3 in a West Coast Conference men's soccer match Friday night at Negoesco Stadium.

The win kept the Bulldogs (9-6-1, 3-1-0) in control of their destiny in pursuit of the WCC title and automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.

Ching opened the scoring when he took a through pass from Mike Thompson and beat USF goalkeeper Scott Spaulding one-on-one at the 11:31 mark. Gonzaga made it 2-0 on a controversial goal that appeared offside when Kuska tapped in a close shot at the near post after a pass from Ching.

The Dons (8-8-0, 1-3-0) closed to 2-1 when Chris Yanto's long shot beat Bulldogs' goalkeeper Trevor Yost into the upper corner at 23:51, but Matt Blasdel scored a similar goal for the visitors at 29:57.

Gonzaga looked like it would lead 3-1 at the half, but Tim Garlick spotted Morten Torgersen ahead of the pack and he scored just five seconds before the halftime horn.

Kuska scored his second goal of the game on another breakaway at 78:41 to re-establish a 4-2 lead, but Per Christian Larsen scored off a rebound at 85:22 to give USF hope again.

Ching, however, erased the Dons' hopes when he combined on a two on one at 86:22 to give Gonzaga the final 5-3 margin.
