SPOKANE, Wash. - - With major league baseball in its playoff run, Gonzaga University will stage its version of the Fall Classic with a pair of events this weekend at August/A.R.T. Stadium. The annual Alumni Game will be Saturday at noon when the alums battle this year's Bulldogs, followed by the 100-inning marathon game Sunday at 11 a.m.
The alumni festivities begin Friday at 2 p.m. as the old-timers return for batting practice. Among the alumni participating is Mike Redmond, a former Bulldog catcher who has spent the past two seasons with the Florida Marlins. Redmond, a product of Spokane's Gonzaga Prep, played in 84 games this season, hitting .302 with 27 RBI. He more than doubled his at-bats this season with 242 compared to 118 over 34 games in 1998. In his limited major league career he is hitting .311 (112-for-360).
The marathon game is the major fundraiser for Bulldog baseball, with the varsity players divided into two teams for the 100 innings.
"This is a great weekend and highlights our fall program," said head coach Steve Hertz, entering his 21st season at Gonzaga and his 23rd year overall as a collegiate head coach. "To have a current major league player come back and play is something special for the players in our program. Mike asked us if we could schedule the weekend around a time he could be here. It's a fun weekend for all of our alumni and brings back special memories of Bulldog baseball."
