SPOKANE, Wash. - Four players scored in double figures as Gonzaga University?s women?s basketball team beat Washington State University 82-66 on Wednesday night.
The Bulldogs (4-3) were paced by Jessica Malone?s game-high 19 points while teammates Sydney Perno and Holly Bruno added 16 points each. Perno knocked down 7-8 shots from the floor and canned 3-4 from the charity stripe. Bruno finished the night with a game-high six assists. Junior Melanie Tipps rounded out the Bulldogs double-figure scorers with 11 points on a perfect 3-3 shooting from the field and 5-5 from the line.
Jennifer Kerns led WSU (2-3) with 17 points while Romie DeAnda and Alke Dietel added 12 points each.
The Bulldogs pulled out to a comfortable 39-31 lead at the half after shooting a blistering 42 percent from 3-point range.
With 8:10 remaining in the second half Jennifer Kerns nailed a three-pointer for WSU to pull the Cougars to within three points at 58-55. The Bulldogs countered the Cougars attack when Malone scored a driving lay-in and then knocked down a three-pointer to help the Zags surge to a 9-0 run. During a span of six minutes the Bulldogs out-scored the Cougars 18-2 and cruised to the 16-point victory.
Once again the Bulldogs dominated the boards, more than doubling WSU?s rebounding (51-24). Gonzaga senior Kristin Deal led all players with 13 rebounds, including six offensive.
The Bulldogs return to action this Sunday when they host the University of Montana. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
