Women's Soccer Falls In Double-Overtime

SPOKANE, Wash. - Lindsey Brouillette touched home a ball from Lacey Ubaldi just over four minutes into the second overtime Friday afternoon as Pepperdine slipped by Gonzaga, 3-2, in a West Coast Conference women's soccer match at Martin Field.

The Waves jumped into the lead early in the first half as Lacey Ubaldi one-touched home a ball sent into the box on a double assist by Tasha Spangler and Kristi Bissonnette. Gonzaga would settle down following the early score and the score would remain 1-0 heading into the half.

In the seond period Gonzaga knotted the score at 1-1 as Sara Streufert hit a ball past a diving Cheri Phillips. The ball ended a GU fast-break that was started when defender Sarah Halton sent the ball into the box for Streufert's score. Gonzaga would take the lead in the 64th minute as Sara Streufert hit a WCC milestone putting the Zags up 2-1 on an assist by Kelly Leffel. The goal pushed Streufert's career scoring total to 101 points making her only the 10th player in WCC history to tally the century mark in points.

Pepperdine would finally get the equalizer as Lacey Ubaldi scored her second goal of the game with a one-touch ball past a diving Gina Legaz. The goal would be set up on a pass from Stacia Spangler.

As both teams battled in overtime, Gonzaga had an early chance to put the game away as a free ball eluded the Pepperdine keeper, Waves defender Julie Stuart cleared the ball just shy of the goal line. GU had another late chance as Katie O'Brien raced the Waves keeper to a loss ball but could not connect for the gamewinner. Pepperdine would finally break the tie with Brouillette's score.

Gonzaga drops to 3-14-0 and 0-7-0 in the WCC and will wrap up its 2000 season next Sunday with a home match against the University of Idaho. Pepperdine improves to 12-4-1 and 2-3-0 in the WCC. Pepperdine will travel to Portland for a Sunday conference match.
