SPOKANE, Wash. - Eastern Washington University avenged an earlier season loss to Gonzaga and for the second straight season defeated the Zags on their home field as the Eagles received a goal midway through the second half to win, 1-0, Wednesday afternoon at Martin Field.

After playing a scoreless first-half in which Gonzaga outshot Eastern 9-2, the teams battled back-and-forth at midfield to open the second half. Eastern goalkeeper Katie Grothkopp came up with a big save in the second half turning away a Sara Streufert shot from the top of the goal box. Grothkopp would end the day with 9 saves.

Eastern finally broke through in the 67th minute when Jessica Fransen send a corner kick into the box. Katie Bowers had the first Eagles scoring opportunity as she headed a ball off the crossbar and then Danielle Blue headed home the rebound past Gonzaga keeper Tara Curtis.

Gonzaga would have a few final attacks on the goal with the best effort coming when freshman Kelly Leffel sent a ball just wide of the open net on a break away chance.

Gonzaga drops to 3-8-0 on the season and will jump back into conference play this weekend with WCC matches at #10 Santa Clara and San Francisco. Eastern Washington improves to 6-7-0 on the year and will host Carroll College later this week.
