SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga used a dominant second half to roll past San Diego 4-0 on Saturday at Luger Field.
Amelia Severn had a goal and an assist for the Zags.
The Bulldogs (3-7-0, 1-1-0 WCC) scored once before halftime, then pulled away with three goals after the break. GU's defense limited USD to four shots, two on goal, while outshooting the Toreros 13-4 overall. Gonzaga also held a 7-4 edge in corner kicks despite even possession.
San Diego (3-1-5, 0-1-1) entered unbeaten and off to the best start in program history. This was Gonzaga's eighth straight win over USD.
Severn struck first in the eighth minute off a feed from
Samantha Snorsky, her third goal of the year. The Zags piled up seven shots and four corners in the opening half while holding the Toreros to one attempt.
Gonzaga broke it open after halftime.
Katelyn Rigg doubled the lead in the 60th minute with her fourth goal of the season. Four minutes later,
Olivia Lester finished a Severn corner to make it 3-0.
Brooke Metcalfe capped the scoring in the 82nd.
USD tested Gonzaga late with shots from Katelyn Bessemer and Josefine Schlichting, but keeper
Michaela McCollum made two saves to preserve the shutout. Ilise Medrano stopped three shots for the Toreros.
The Zags stay home to host San Francisco (1-5-3, 0-1-1) on Oct. 4 at 1 p.m. The Dons tied Saint Mary's 1-1 on Saturday. The match will stream on ESPN+ with live stats on GoZags.com.
