SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University head baseball coach Steve Hertz has announced the signing of Josh Markle for the 2002 baseball season. Markle, currently a sophomore left-handed pitcher at Treasure Valley (Ore.) Community College, is the only Bulldog baseball prospect to sign a national letter of intent during the early signing period.
Markle, a 6-5 southpaw, posted a 3-5 record with 51 strikeouts last season helping guide Treasure Valley C.C. to a third place finish in the JUCO Region 18 tournament and 28-28 overall record. He becomes the second player from Treasure Valley C.C. to sign with Gonzaga during the past two years joining current Bulldogs infielder Nate Gold. Treasure Valley is coached by former Zags standout Gary Van Tol who is entering his fifth season at the Ontario, Oregon school.
Originally from Longmont, Colorado, Markle was a standout football and baseball player at Longmont High. He was an honorable mention All-State selection in baseball as a junior and senior participating in the Top 40 All-Star Game. Markle was also an All-State selection in football.
Gonzaga opens its 2001 season on Feb. 9 when the Bulldogs battle Washington State University in a three-game series in Pasco, Washington.
