SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University senior baseball player Barry Matthews has been named to the second team preseason All-America team as selected by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. Matthews hit .344 as a junior with a team high 17 doubles and 51 RBI's. The Northridge, Calif., native also set a school record with a 26-game hitting streak that came to an end in the final game of the season. The first team was highlighted by Mark Teixeira of Georgia Tech, the collegiate baseball player of the year last season, and South Carolina All-American pitcher Kip Bouknight. The preseason All-America list also included several players on teams Gonzaga will face during the 2001 season led by Arizona State's Casey Myers (1st team).
