The BYU Cougars stormed into the Kennel on Saturday night and claimed their fourth victory of the year as they defeated the Gonzaga Bulldogs women's basketball team 74-57 in front of a season-high attendance crowd of 574 Bulldog fans.
The game started out with both teams exchanging baskets as neither team led more than 7 points during the first 13 minutes of the first half. Erin Bergman's 3-pointer at the top of the key cut the BYU lead to 25-21 at the 5:23 mark. The Bulldogs never came within 4 points throughout the rest of the game as the Cougars headed into the locker rooms with a 41-28 advantage at halftime.
Brigham Young came out smoking at the start of the second half. Stacey Jensen's 3-pointer stretched the Cougars lead to 20 points, 50-30, at the 16:37 mark. Jessica Malone's lay-up and free-throw shot capped a 9-0 Gonzaga run that got the Bulldogs to within 9 points, 60-52, with 6:20 to play in the game. The Cougars expanded the lead to 15 points as Erin Thorne and Jorja Cox connected on back-to-back 3-pointers that put the daggers in the Zags' attempt at a comeback that gave BYU a 71-55 lead they would never relinquish.
Rebounds were one of the main downfalls for the Bulldogs as BYU accumulated a 46-33 advantage that gave them more chances to execute their offensive game plan. Heather Chessman, Erin Thorne and Stacey Jensen combined for 44 points on the night. Thorne led the Cougars with 17 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists.
Jessica Malone had a game-high 20 points and a team-high 3 assists. Triana Allen played the entire 40 minutes of the contest as her defensive intensity led to 2 steals and 4 defensive rebounds for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldog women drop to 2-4 as BYU ups their record to 4-1 on the year. Gonzaga picks up action again this coming Tuesday, December 5, as they try for their 3rd victory of the season when they take on the Bobcats of Montana State at 7 p.m. at The Kennel.
