SACRAMENTO, Calif.
Sacramento State picked up their first win of the season as Michelle St. Clair and Sephora Scoubes combined for 38 points en route to a 71-58 downing of the Bulldogs in a non-conference women's basketball game Saturday night at the Hornet Gym.
Torilyn Boyd's jumper at the 17:10 mark capped a 9-2 Sacramento State run to start the game as the Hornets came out determined to win their first game of the season. Anne Bickelhaupt's lay up with 11:53 showing closed the gap to 18-14 as the Bulldogs were denied a lead throughout the rest of the game by the Hornets tough defensive pressure.
The Hornets held their largest lead of the game, 42-25, right before halftime as the Bulldogs headed into the locker room facing a 42-29 deficit at the half.
The Hornets held a 59-49 lead at the 5:46 mark in the second half. The Bulldogs put together a 7-0 run and managed to close the margin to just four points, 59-55, with 4:06 remaining as Bernice Stime stole an errant pass and dished the ball to Triana Allen for a lay up.
The Hornets responded with a 7-0 run of their own as Nichole Hardaway's jumper stretched the lead to 66-55 as Sacramento State never looked back.
Gonzaga dropped their second consecutive game bringing their record to 4-8, while Sacramento State put an end to their dismal eight game season-opening losing skid and picked up their first victory of the year.
The Hornets were led by Michelle St. Clair's game-high 20 points. Sephora Scoubes chipped in with 18 points and Torilynn Boyd added 15 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. The Hornets were 8-for-12 for 67 percent from behind the arc.
Jessica Malone was held below her 20.1 points per game average and finished with a team-high 14 points. Bernice Stime had a solid game as she grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds and added 10 points and three assists.
Overall, the Bulldogs finished their four game road excursion winning only 1-of-4 on the road from Dec. 17 through Dec. 30. The Bulldogs dropped contests to Washington State 56-74, Montana State 47-68, and tonight's 58-71 contest against Sacramento State. The Zags picked up their only win during the stretch in a 74-73 last-second thriller over Montana on Dec. 20.
The Zag women travel back to Spokane and prepare to lace them up for Colgate University in a 4:30 p.m. contest on Jan. 2 in the Spokane Arena. The game is the first half of a doubleheader, the Bulldog men facing the University of New Mexico in the 7:30 p.m. nightcap.
