SAN FRANCISCO - It took two extra days to be called an official game but on Monday afternoon Gonzaga's 6-1 lead over Saint Mary's College was transformed into a 6-1 Bulldog victory. The two teams had hoped to complete the game prior to playing a double-header on Sunday, but rain washed out Sunday's play and handed the Zags (3-1) their third win of the season while Saint Mary's dropped to 7-6.
In the 6-1 win over the Gaels, Steve Bennett tossed six innings of one run baseball to improve to 2-0 on the season. Along the way he fanned nine Saint Mary's batters while allowing only three hits. Bennett gave way to a four-some of Gonzaga pitchers that closed the door on Saint Mary's in the seventh and final inning of the ball game.
The Zags did all the damage they would need to in the top of the fifth inning when they scored four runs off the Gaels pitching staff. Jeremy Doane started the Bulldogs rally with a double to right centerfield. Doane would come around to score when Bulldogs second baseman Eric Rodland reached on an error that chased Saint Mary's starter Evan Rust (0-3) from the game. Gonzaga would then load the bases on a single by Jason Bay and a walk to Adam Stokey. Barry Matthews followed with a single to drive in his team leading seventh run of the season and keep the Bulldog rally alive. Jared Hertz and Brian Munhall would pick-up the other Bulldog RBI's in the inning as Hertz was hit by a pitch with bases loaded and Munhall beat out an infield single to cap off the Gonzaga scoring for the fifth inning.
Gonzaga would add its final two runs in the sixth inning as Jason Bay and Adam Stokey each collected RBI's driving home Jeremy Doane and Eric Rodland. The Zags will now travel to Seattle for their second in-state series of the season as they take on the University of Washington (1-4) at Husky Baseball Stadium. Game time for Friday's series opener is 6:30 p.m.
