SAN FRANCISCO - Gonzaga's (12-11, 5-4) offense broke out with six runs in the top of the fourth inning Saturday afternoon as the Bulldogs cruised to an 11-5 West Coast Conference victory over San Francisco (16-11, 3-5) at Benedetti Diamond.
After allowing an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning, the Bulldogs broke open a tight game in the fourth inning against San Francisco starter Jesse Mena (3-2). Jason Bay opened the big inning with a double followed by a Barry Matthews single. Adam Stokey drew a walk off Mena to load the bases with no outs. Jared Hertz then drew a walk to even the game at 1-1. Kevin Hara continued his hot conference hitting with a run scoring single. Danny Evans sacrifice fly scored Adam Stokey from third to give the Zags a 3-1 lead. Freshman Eric Rodland then connected for his first collegiate home run with a three run shot to right field.
The six runs would prove to be all Gonzaga ace Steve Bennett (4-2) would need on the afternoon as he pitched his first complete game of the season allowing only three earned runs on the afternoon.
Gonzaga would add two more runs in the top of the fifth inning with Jason Bay's lead off home run and Adam Stokey's run scoring double. The Zags were led offensively on the day by two freshman as Eric Rodland and Danny Evans each drove home three runs and Jason Bay went 3-for-3 at the plate.
Gonzaga and San Francisco will play the rubber game of this three game series at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. The game can be heard on Spokane radio station KTRW AM 970 or on the internet through the Gonzaga web site. Veteran broadcaster Bob Robertson will have all the play-by-play action starting with the pre-game show at 12:50 p.m.
