Zags Shut Out Whitworth, 6-0

SPOKANE, Wash. - Jared Hertz hit a two-run home run and Adam Stokey drove home two more runs as the Gonzaga Bulldogs (14-12) stepped out of West Coast Conference action Wednesday afternoon to defeat Whitworth College (7-13), 6-0, at August / A.R.T. Stadium in Spokane.
Hertz accounted for the first two Bulldogs runs with a towering shot over the right field fence that plated Adam Stokey. Jason Bay drove home the third Zags run in the bottom of the third with the first of his two singles.
Gonzaga would push across its final three runs of the afternoon in the bottom of the sixth inning chasing Whitworth starter Darin Radke (2-1) from the ballgame. Adam Stokey drove home the first two runs of the frame with his second double of the afternoon. Stokey would then come around to score on a sharply hit ball to third base by shortstop Kevin Hara.
The Bulldogs used six pitchers on the afternoon to collect their first shutout since March 11, 1999 when Gonzaga shut out the United States Naval Academy at the Pespi / Johnny Quik Classic. Freshman Darin Trautmann (1-0) pitched into the fourth inning to post his first collegiate victory while Scott Stencil looked strong in 3.1 innings of relief with seven strike outs. As a staff the Zags struck out 12 Whitworth batters.
Gonzaga received two hits a piece on the afternoon from Eric Rodland, Jason Bay, Adam Stokey, and Kevin Hara while Aaron Keller went 2-for-3 for Whitworth to account for two of the Pirates five hits.
Gonzaga will return to action this Friday when the Zags play host to Washington State. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m. at August / A.R.T. Stadium.
