PULLMAN, Wash. - All nine Gonzaga (15-13) starters collected at least one hit, one RBI and scored one run as the Zags pounded Washington State (13-17), 15-4, on Saturday afternoon at Bailey-Brayton Field in Pullman. The two teams will play the final game of the weekend series on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at August / A.R.T. Stadium in Spokane.
Freshman John Gebbers got things started for the Zags in the opening frame as he connected for a two-run single through the right side. Gonzaga would go on to add two more runs in the top of the first to lead 4-0. Wes Falkenborg would drive home Ray Hattenburg in the bottom of the first inning to give the Cougars their first run, but they would never threaten against Zags starter Barry Matthews (6-1). Matthews would toss seven strong innings allowing only one earned run.
The Zags opened up their hitting attack even more in the top of the third inning as Adam Stokey drove home two with a double down the right field line. Brian Munhall would add a RBI double to put the Bulldogs up 8-1 after three innings which would chase WSU starter Zach Fisher (2-1).
The Zags added two more in the fifth off Jason Bay's 8th home run of the season and GU pushed across its final five runs in the top of the sixth to even this weekend series at one game apiece. Gonzaga was led on the afternoon by a trio of players with four hits including Jason Bay, Barry Matthews, and Brian Munhall. Ray Hattenburg led the Cougars with three hits.
Gonzaga now leads the season series against Washington State 3 games to 2 games with the final game of the season on Sunday. Sean Lichter will go for the Zags while WSU will counter with Matt O'Brien. Washington State used five pitchers out of its bullpen during Saturday's loss.
