SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga junior lefthander Barry Matthews allowed just one earned run and improved his season record to 6-1 (3.98 ERA) over the weekend with a victory over Washington State. The effort landed Matthews West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week honors, making him the second Zag to win the award this season.
Matthews, a native of Northridge, Calif., also helped himself out going 4-for-5 at the plate scoring a pair of runs in the Zags 15-4 victory over the Cougars. Matthews and the Bulldogs look to make up ground this weekend in the WCC race as they battle Saint Mary's College while front-running Loyola Marymount travels to Pepperdine.
