THE WEEK AHEAD: Gonzaga prepares to jump back into West Coast Conference this weekend as the Zags travel to Moraga, California, for the second time this season. Early in the year, Gonzaga traveled South to face Saint Mary's in a non-WCC weekend series. Gonzaga posted a 6-1 victory in a rain-shortened game on Saturday before the series was washed away. The Zags remain in the thick of the Coast Division race despite not playing a conference game over the weekend. Gonzaga lost only a half-game in the standings thanks in-large part to Saint Mary's which won a game in the series against Loyola Marymount. Now the Zags face Saint Mary's, while Loyola Marymount battles Pepperdine. Prior to jumping back into WCC action, Gonzaga will host NAIA defending National Champion Lewis-Clark State on Wednesday afternoon. Once again the Zags will give their young pitching staff an opportunity to get some work.
ZAGS SPILT IN NON-CONFERENCE TILTS: The Zags mixed in a non-conference week of action in the middle of their schedule and finished the week with a 2-2 mark. On Wednesday, the Zags used six pitchers to combine for a 6-0 shutout over Whitworth College. The shutout was the first by the Bulldogs since a 21-0 blanking of the Naval Academy in March of 1999. Darrin Trautmann pitched three strong innings for his first collegiate win, while Scott Stencil struck out seven Pirates out of the bullpen. Over the weekend, Gonzaga lost only its second series of the year dropping two out of three games to state rival Washington State. In the series the home team failed to win a game with Sunday's game being the only one decided by less than 8 runs. In the series opener, Gonzaga trailed 6-4 as Steve Bennett exited the game in the seventh inning. Washington State would go on to pound the GU bullpen for 8 runs in the final three innings. On Saturday, Gonzaga returned the favor at Pullman as Barry Matthews improved to 6-1 on the year and helped his own cause with a 4-for-5 afternoon. In the series finale, WSU manufactured two runs in the top of the fourth and held on for a 5-2 victory.
LEWIS-CLARK WARRIORS: The Warriors come into week with a 29-7 record after posting a 5-3 record in the Hawai'i Easter Classic. During the tourney, LCSC split a pair of games against Pepperdine, downing the Waves 4-2 and losing 2-7. First baseman Trevor Brown leads the Warriors with a .450 average while starter Chris Mabeus is 7-0 with a 1.99 ERA.
SAINT MARY'S GAELS: Saint Mary's comes into this WCC weekend series in last place in the West Division, 7.5 games behind Pepperdine. The Gaels are coming off a series loss to Loyola Marymount in which the Lions won two out of three games. The victory by Saint Mary's did help out Gonzaga as the Zags only lost a half-game to LMU in the standings. In the series against LMU, the Gaels were dismantled on Friday giving up 30 runs on 30 hits to the Lions. SMC was able to rebound on Saturday winning the opening game of the double-header and giving up a big inning late to lose the nightcap to Loyola Marymount. Designated hitter Tony Graziani leads the Gaels with a .407 average while relief pitcher Nick Wilcox is the only Saint Mary's pitcher with an earned run average under 5.00
ZAGS BASEBALL ON THE AIR: Gonzaga baseball will once again be on the radio this weekend during the Zags weekend series with Saint Mary's. Veteran broadcaster Bob Robertson (Spokane Indians) will call several Gonzaga games throughout the season on Spokane radio station KTRW AM 970. The Bulldogs radio broadcasts can also be heard over the internet at www.gozags.com.

HERTZ QUEST FOR 600 CONTINUES: Steve Hertz is in the midst of his third decade of coaching at Gonzaga as he leads the Bulldogs for his 21st season as head coach. An All-Conference pitcher at Gonzaga in the early 1970's, Hertz guided the Bulldogs to an NCAA Regional Final in his first season as head coach in 1978. Following a two-year stint as head coach at UC-Irvine, Hertz returned to his alma mater in 1981 and has guided the Bulldogs through three different conferences. In his 20 years at Gonzaga, Hertz has compiled a 539-537-5 mark while his 22-year career record stands at 598-599-5.
ZAGS COMPLETE BASEBALL RARITY AGAINST WSU: During Saturday's victory over Washington State, the Zags completed the game with a baseball rarity. Each of Gonzaga's nine starters for the game got into the action with every Zag starter scoring at least one run, collecting at least one hit and driving home at least one run. Combined the nine Zags starters posted a season high of 18 hits, while driving home 14 runs. The 15 runs scored by the Bulldogs were the second most scored this season, behind the 19 runs posted earlier in the season against Loyola Marymount. In the game, Jason Bay, Barry Matthews and Brian Munhall each collected four hits (the first Zags to get 4 or more hits this season), while Bay led the Zags with three RBI's and four runs scored. In the first inning of the game, freshman John Gebbers drove home his first two runs as a collegian with a single to right.
BARRY MATTHEWS PITCHES HIS WAY TO WCC HONOR: Barry Matthews improved to 6-1 on the season with Saturday's victory over Washington State. For his efforts, Matthews was awarded WCC Pitcher of the Week honors, making him the second Zag to win the honor this season. Steve Bennett has previously won the award on three occasions. Against WSU, Matthews allowed just one earned run over seven innings, scattering eight Cougar hits. Matthews gave way to the Gonzaga bullpen in the eighth inning with GU leading 15-2. Matthews leads the Zags with three complete games on the season.
BAY BREAKS INTO HOME RUN ELITE: Senior Jason Bay continued his climb up the Gonzaga home run record book as he added two more long balls to his career total. Bay has now vaulted himself into sole possession of fourth place on the Zags home run list with his seventh and eighth shots of the year. Bay now stands just three home runs short of etching his name in the Zags single season home run list for a second time. Bay also stands just six home runs short of reaching the West Coast Conference career top ten home run list.

CHASING HISTORY: Freshman John Gebbers made his long awaited debut in a Zags baseball uniform during Wednesday's victory over Whitworth College. Gebbers belted a single to right center in his first at-bat and started the final two games against Washington State for an injured Danny Evans. Gebbers also collected his first collegiate RBI's on Saturday driving home two against the Cougars. Gebbers now has only 227 hits and 152 RBI's left to go to catch his father in the Gonzaga record book. Gebbers dad, Mac Gebbers, ranks as one of the best Gonzaga players of all-time and is the only Zag to have his uniform number retired.
STOKEY HITTING DOUBLES STRIDE: Junior Adam Stokey hit doubles in three of the Zags four games last week and continues to climb the Gonzaga career list for doubles. Stokey now stands at 38 doubles for his career and has seven two-baggers for the year. Stokey joins five other Zags on this year's team with at-least seven doubles on the season. Jason Bay leads the team with 10 followed by Barry Matthews with 9, Jared Hertz with 8 and Brian Munhall joins Stokey with seven doubles. Currently eleven Zags have contributed to the teams total of 56.

HELPING HIS OWN CAUSE: Most players who play a position and pitch at the college level struggle at the plate a little on days they take the mound. In junior Barry Matthews case the opposite seems to be true. Matthews has lit things up when he takes the mound with a .382 average including 10 RBI's and 11 runs scored en route to posting a 6-1 record this season.
STREAKING ZAGS: Several Zags continue to swing a hot bat at the mid-way point of the 2000 season. Junior Adam Stokey leads Gonzaga with a current nine game hitting streak followed closely by Brian Munhall with an eight game streak. After having 11 game hitting streaks snapped earlier this year, Eric Rodland and Jason Bay have rebounded to put together modest streaks. Rodland now stands at seven games with Bay standing at five games.
