April 8, 2000

Box Score

MORAGA, Calif. - David Hixson collected two saves pitching two perfect ninth innings on Saturday afternoon at Louis Guisto Field as Gonzaga (17-15, 8-5 WCC) swept a West Coast Conference double-header from Saint Mary's College (12-24, 3-11 WCC) in Moraga, CA. The Zags won the opener 5-4 and the nightcap 6-4. The final game of the three game series will be at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.

In the nightcap, Adam Stokey connected on a two run blast in the top of the eighth inning to propel Gonzaga to the come-from-behind victory. Stokey's shot gave the Zags a one run cushion before Eric Rodland could add another run in the ninth scoring on a wild pitch by Saint Mary's starter Jason Morgan-Voyce (3-4). David Hixson pitched a perfect ninth for Gonzaga to collect his second save of the day and third on the year.

Saint Mary's opened the scoring in the second game as Kaazim Summerville led off the game with a triple to left center off Gonzaga pitcher Barry Matthews (7-1). Mark Teahan would single to score Summerville, but Matthews was able to avoid any further damage as he pitched eight strong innings on the day to get his seventh victory.

Gonzaga moved into the lead in the top of the third inning as Brent Church and Barry Matthews each collected RBI singles to put the Zags up 2-1. The Bulldogs would concede the Gaels a run in the bottom of the inning as Kaazim Summerville scored again on a safety squeeze by Jason Waugh.

In the fifth inning the Zags appeared ready to break open the game as they loaded the bases with no outs and the heart of the batting order up. Gonzaga could only manage one run as Kevin Hara scored from third on a throwing error to the plate. Saint Mary's would get out of the jam thanks in large part to a rare double-play in which Barry Matthews flied out to center field and Eric Rodland was thrown out at the plate attempting to score.

Saint Mary's regained the lead in their half of the seventh with Kaazim Summerville again supplying the damage. Summerville singled home Brett Wayne and would eventually come around to score setting the table for Stokey's dramatics. Jason Bay opened the eighth inning with his only hit of the day and moved to second on a stolen base. Stokey then connected on a 2-2 count to put the Zags up for good.
