Two Gonzaga Baseball Players Named To All-District Academic Team

SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga baseball players Steve Bennett and Jared Hertz were honored for both their success in the class room as well as on the playing field as both Bulldogs were named to the 2000 GTE / CoSIDA Academic All-District VIII Team released today. The team was voted on by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) members from within District VIII. All district selections will now be placed on the national ballot for GTE / CoSIDA Academic All-America Baseball honors. That team will be announced on June 6.
Steve Bennett, a senior from Helena, MT, was one of two pitchers named to represent District VIII. Bennett has already completed his undergraduate studies with a 3.60 in Human Resource Management. The senior right hander is currently pursuing a Masters in Business Administration while finishing up his collegiate career with the Bulldogs. During the 2000 season Bennett has steadily climbed up the Gonzaga pitching record books posting an 8-4 record with a 3.59 ERA and 105 strike outs. Two weeks ago, Bennett was recognized by the Gonzaga Bulldog Club as the Male Senior Athlete of the Year.
Jared Hertz, a junior from La Verne, CA, was one of three outfielders named to represent District VIII. Hertz currently maintains a 3.90 g.p.a in Finance while patrolling right field for the Bulldogs. Hertz ranks fourth on the Gonzaga squad with a .309 batting average and is second on the team with 11 doubles and fifth on the team with 30 RBI.
