SPOKANE, Wash. - Sophomore Peter Dunkle (3-6) saved his best performance of the season for the next to last game of the season as the San Francisco (26-32, 10-20 WCC) right hander scattered three Gonzaga (27-23, 17-13 WCC) hits on Sunday afternoon to blank the Bulldogs, 4-0. It was the first time since March 5, 1998 that Gonzaga had been held scoreless and gives San Francisco a season split with the Bulldogs at three games each.
Gonzaga had the first opportunity to score in the game as Barry Matthews led off the bottom of the second with a single to right center, extending his hitting streak to 24 games. Danny Evans followed three batters later with Gonzaga's second hit to left field, but Danny Trumble gunned down Matthews at the plate to prevent Gonzaga from scoring.
San Francisco broke through in the top of the third inning against Gonzaga senior Matt Siwek (0-5) who had retired the first six batters in order. Dons catcher Nick Guerra drew a lead off walk and was moved to second base with a sacrifice bunt by Ryan Leahy. Following a Gonzaga error, Tony Hurtado provided all the offense San Francisco would need with a sharp line drive down the left field line that scored Guerra. Jason Howard followed with an RBI single and Tag Bozied drove home the Dons final run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to right field. Matt Siwek would work through the sixth inning for the Bulldogs allowing only two earned runs for the game but was on the losing end of the decision.
The Bulldogs had one final opportunity to rally on Senior Day at August / A.R.T. Stadium in Spokane as Barry Matthews and Jeremy Doane drew lead off walks against Dunkle. Danny Evans then drew a walk to load the bases with one out, but Dunkle was able to work out of the jam striking out Kevin Hara and forcing Brian Munhall into a ground out to give San Francisco the victory.
Dons center fielder Dustin Delucchi was the only player to record more than one base hit on a day when hits were scarce as he went 2-for-3 to lead San Francisco. Brent Church collected the final Zags hit of the afternoon as Dunkle allowed three only three hits for the game.
Gonzaga will now travel to Seattle for two games against Washington on Tuesday and Wednesday night.
