Gonzaga Rebounds For 10-3 Victory In Seattle

May 17, 2000

Box Score

SEATTLE - Scott Stencil (3-2) scattered four Washington Husky (26-27) hits over six innings of work Wednesday night and the Gonzaga Bulldog (28-24) offense provided all the run support needed in the early innings as Gonzaga rolled to a 10-3 victory at Husky Ballpark in Seattle. The two teams end the season series tied with three wins each.

Gonzaga jumped off to an early lead once again as Washington pitcher Zack Daniels (4-2) walked the first three batters of the game to load the bases. Daniels would then force Barry Matthews into a double-play ball that scored Eric Rodland from third for the games first run. The Bulldogs continued their assault in top of the second inning as Kevin Hara's sacrifice fly to right field scored Kevin Cave who reached base with a single to left. Danny Evans then scored the Zags third run on an RBI double by Eric Rodland.

Washington attempted a rally in the bottom of the second inning as Jay Garthwaite tripled home Tyler Davidson for the Huskies first run. That would be the only trouble Gonzaga pitcher Scott Stencil would face during the game until giving up the second Washington run in the sixth inning on back-to-back doubles by Ben Miller and Marc Rittenhouse. Washington's final run came in the seventh inning with doubles by Jay Garthwaite and Ben Miller, but Bulldog reliever Darrin Trautmann worked three solid innings to collect the save for Gonzaga.

Following Washington's single run in the bottom of the second inning, Gonzaga responded with seven runs over the next three innings. In the third inning, Brian Munhall drove home Jason Bay and Barry Matthews scored on a Husky error. Matthews reached base on a double to right field to extend his hitting streak to 26 games and set a new Gonzaga school record for consecutive hitting games. Kevin Hara and Jason Bay added solo home runs in the fifth inning to wrap up the Gonzaga scoring for the game.

Jason Bay led the Zags with a 3-for-5 afternoon while Eric Rodland, Brent Church and Kevin Hara all had two hit games. Jay Garthwaite and Ben Miller combined for four of Washington's seven hits each collecting two hits. The game also featured seven strike outs by Gonzaga pitchers to move the Zags season total over the 400 mark for the first time in school history. Gonzaga looks to match its highest win total since 1995 on Thursday night as the Bulldogs play their final game of the 2000 season against Lewis-Clark State in Lewiston at 6:30 p.m.
