SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University associate head baseball coach Mark Machtolf is one of six finalists for the head coaching position at Washington State University.

Machtolf has been associate head coach of the Bulldogs since 1998. He joined the Bulldogs for the 1988 season as assistant coach, and remained until 1990. He worked one season as an assistant coach at Whitworth College while pursuing his master's degree, then coached and taught at Spokane's Gonzaga Prep from 1992-95. Machtolf returnd to the Bulldogs for the 1996 season as a volunteer coach, and was named a fulltime assistant coach in the summer of 1997.
Machtolf's primary responsibilities are with the hitters, and the Bulldogs have re-written several offensive records the past two seasons while contending for the West Coast Conference title. As associate head coach he also plays a major role in the off-the-field areas of recruiting, academic progress and the day-to-day administration of the program.
A 1987 graduate of Stanford University, Machtolf was a member of the Cardinal's 1987 Colege World Series title team and led the CWS in hitting. A 4-year baseball letter winner and a 2-year member of Stanford's football team, he received his B.A. in history.
The Cougars are seeking a replacement for Steve Farrington, who spent the past six seasons in Pullman. A decision is expected next week according to WSU athletic director Jim Sterk.
