SPOKANE, Wash. - The University of Portland (2-0-0, 1-0-0 WCC) women's soccer team extended its winning streak over Gonzaga University (0-2-0, 0-1-0 WCC) to nine games with a 3-0 victory Friday afternoon at Martin Field. The West Coast Conference opener for both clubs was played in front of 430 fans.
After several offensive attacks were turned away in the opening fifteen minutes of the game, the Pilots finally broke through against the Gonzaga defense at the 18:51 mark. Kylee Barton connected with a streaking Vanessa Talbot who drove home what would be the game winning goal from about nine yards out.
Portland quickly made the contest 2-0 as Erin Misaki connected for a header two minutes later at the 20:52 mark. Misaki's goal came off a cross from Lauren Orlandos. Gonzaga attempted a quick answer, but a shot by Katie Carpenter was blocked in the Portland goal box and bounced harmlessly out-of-bounds.
The final goal of the game was tallied at 30:27 as Kylee Barton connected for a header on a cross from Brooke O'Hanley. Portland would go into the locker room at halftime outshooting Gonzaga 15-3 and 28-8 for the contest.
The Gonzaga offensive showed signs of life late in the game as the Zags had two good scoring chances the best by Amber Richart that was saved by Portland goalie Cheryl Loveless. For the Portland senior goalkeeper it was the 24th shutout of her career.
Gonzaga returns to action on Sunday afternoon as the Bulldogs host Whitman College at 1:00 p.m. Portland returns home to host the University of Oregon on Monday afternoon.
