Bernice Stime scored a career-high 15 points but her efforts were in a losing cause as the San Diego Toreros thumped Gonzaga women's basketball team, 81-55, in Thursday night's West Coast Conference action at USD's Jenny Craig Pavilion.
The game started out as a defensive struggle. Amanda Fahsholtz connected on two free throws that kept the Bulldogs within one point, 15-14, with 10:29 left in the first half. The Bulldogs took, what would prove to be their only lead of the game, when Stime spotted Nathalie Chevallay as she drove to the hoop for an uncontested layin, 16-15, at the 8:07 mark.
The Toreros went on a 12-0 run when Amanda Bishop's 3-pointer connected and gave USD a 27-16 advantage with 4:55 remaining in the half. The Toreros would open up a 20-point lead, 40-20, going into halftime as Kerri Nakamoto hit a jumper that capped an 11-0 run. Gonzaga shot a meager 28 percent, 8-of-29, in the first half.
The Bulldogs had no answers for USD's offensive onslaught that continued at the beginning of the second half. The Toreros came out of halftime and went on an 11-0 scoring spree that put Gonzaga against the ropes as they faced a 31-point deficit with 15:26 left in the game.
San Diego maintained control throughout the rest of the game as Gonzaga witnessed the Toreros shoot a deadly 59 percent for the game. The Toreros dropped in 29-of-49 shots from the field.
Five Toreros scored in double-digits as San Diego's leading scorer, Amber Jansen, led the way with 18 points on 7-for-8 shooting. Other Torero's in double-digits included Erin Malich with 12 points, Robyn Fortney with 11 points, Kerri Nakamoto and Amanda Bishop each chipped in with 10 points. Nakamoto also had a game-high 10 assists and three steals.
The only highlight of GU's night was when Bernice Stime set a career-high with 14 points. Stime led the Zags in rebounds and points with five and 14 respectively. The Bulldogs leader in scoring and rebounds, Jessica Malone, was held to just 3-of-13 shooting for 12 points.
Gonzaga (5-13, 0-5) is still winless in the WCC as San Diego (6-10, 1-4) picked up their first "W" in conference play. The Zag women head to Santa Clara to take on the Broncos on Saturday. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
