SAN FRANCISCO - Zuzana Tumova and Natasha Kozen each tallied 13 kills Saturday night as Gonzaga (4-10, 1-3 WCC) knocked off San Francisco (7-6, 2-2 WCC) at War Memorial Gym. The Zags won their first West Coast Conference match of the season in three exciting games winning 31-29, 34-32 and 30-25.
Momentum in game one swung back and forth as the two teams battled to a 25-25 tie before stretching the score to 29-29. Gonzaga sophomore Abby Cullen then came up big with consecutive kills to give the Zags the 31-29 edge.
San Francisco controlled the second game of the match moving out to a 29-24 lead. Gonzaga received a lift off the bench as Jamie VanMeetren entered the game and reeled off four straight kills with six digs as the Zags rallied to win game two 34-32.
In the final game Gonzaga ran off a late 6-1 scoring streak behind kills by Kozen, VanMeetren and Tumova as the Zags won the match with a 30-25 game three victory.
Tumova and Kozen each finished with 13 kills for Gonzaga while Cullen added nine kills. VanMeetren finished the match with six kills and ten digs. Zags setter Katerina Chroustovska finished with 44 assists to tie for ninth most in a 3-game match at Gonzaga. San Francisco was led by Teresa Russell with a match-high 17 kills while Nikki Stover finished with 11 kills.
Gonzaga returns home to host Saint Mary's College and the University of San Diego next weekend at Martin Centre.
