MORAGA, Calif. - Gonzaga University suffered its third straight loss and its fifth in the last six outings as Saint Mary's College posted a 30-27, 30-20, 30-28 West Coast Conference volleyball victory Saturday night.
The win avenged an earlier loss by the Gaels (5-18, 2-10) against the Bulldogs (8-17, 4-9) in Spokane. Gonzaga won that match in five games.
Neither team got off to a solid start Saturday, Gonzaga hitting .071 in the first match to .053 by the Gaels. But Saint Mary's heated up in games two and three, connecting at a .447 clip in the second game and .381 in the final game to finish the match with a .297 attack percentage.
Gonzaga, meanwhile, never really got into an offensive rhythm. The Bulldogs hit .167 in game two and .196 in game three to finish the night at .147.
Christina Davis was one bright spot for the Bulldogs, having a match-high 12 kills and finishing with a team-high .346 attack percentage. Abby Cullen contributed 11 kills but had just a .185 attack percentage.
Rachel Avilla was the lone Gael with double-digit kills, leading her team with 11 and posting a .360 attack percentage. Lindsey Bogason had 9 kills and Rebecca Wood 8 on her way to a .429 attack percentage.
The Gaels were also strong at the net with one block solo and 15 block assists, while Gonzaga had just eight block assists for the match.
The Bulldogs conclude the season next Saturday when the University of Portland visits for a 7 p.m. match.
