Box Score

ANCHORAGE, AK - Gonzaga forward Jessica Malone scored a game-high 22 points and became the all-time career 3-point leader in the West Coast Conference but it was not enough as the Gonzaga University (2-2) fell to the University of Iowa Hawkeyes (2-0) 90-73 in the championship game of the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout.

Malone finished 6-of-9 from 3-point range to surpass the old record of 223 career 3-pointers held by Deana Lansing of Portland.

Iowa raced out to a quick 17-10 advantage at the 14:17 mark as Jennie Lillis knocked down three early shots in the post. Malone began to warm up from behind the arc at 12:58 as the senior hit three straight 3-pointers to pull the Zags even at 23-23.

The teams would trade baskets before Shootout MVP Lindsey Meyer hit back-to-back 3-pointers to put the Hawkeyes out in front 35-25. Malone would pick up her third foul in the opening half with 2 minutes remaining but the Ashley Burke connected for three lay-ups on fast breaks to close the lead to 48-39 at the half.

Malone cut the Iowa lead to six at 19:45 of the second half as she hit her record breaking sixth 3-pointer of the game. The Zags could not capitalize on the early score as they turned the ball over on three of their next six possessions, falling behind 60-47 at the 16:33 mark.

Juliann Laney hit consecutive buckets to cut the Iowa lead to 12 at 14:16 but two 3-pointers by Alaska native Leah Magner pushed the lead back to 14 and the Zags would never get any closer in the contest.

Burke chipped in 17 points for the Bulldogs who return to action this Saturday with their home opener against the University of the Pacific at 7 p.m. Burke and Malone both earned all-tournament honors for Gonzaga. Raeanna Jewell led all players with 11 rebounds including 10 in the first half.

Iowa was led by Meder's 21 points while Lillis and Magner each finished with 13 points. Lillis also earned all-tournament honors along with Marquette's Rachel Klug and Alaska Anchorage's Jennifer Stoddard. The Golden Eagles defeated the host Seawolves in the third-place game earlier on Wednesday.
