SPOKANE, Wash. - Patrick Donovan, a 6-1, 160-pound left-handed pitcher from Spokane's North Central High, has signed a letter-of-intent to play baseball for Gonzaga University, Bulldogs head coach Steve Hertz announced.
As a junior last spring, Donovan went 9-1 with a 1.17 ERA in earning All-Greater Spokane League accolades. He pitched 68.3 innings, fanned 97 and walked 20 in leading the Indians to the Washington State 4A championship game.
The Indians, coached by former Bulldog Scott Harmon, went 18-5 overall, captured the Greater Spokane League title and the District IV crown to advance to State. Donovan hurled NC into the championship game with a 2-0 win over Shoreline in the semifinals, striking out 10. NC lost to Federal Way in the title game.
As a sophomore, Donovan went 9-1 with a 1.75 ERA, pitched 63.3 innings, struck out 70 and walked 18 in earning All-GSL honors.
Also a member of the Indians' basketball team, he is the starting point guard and team captain.
"We believe he is the best lefthander in the State," Hertz said. "He will have an immediate impact on our program as a freshman. He is far beyond his years as far as the craft of pitching is concerned. He is a fine pitcher right now."
Off the field Donovan carries a 3.97 grade point average, is a member of National Honor Society and is on the NC Honor Roll.
