PORTLAND - Jared Hertz's two-run single highlighted a three-run seventh inning Sunday afternoon as Gonzaga (2-1) came back from a 3-1 deficit to beat Portland (1-2) 8-3 in non-conference baseball. Gonzaga wins the weekend series after the two clubs split Saturday's double-header at Pilot Field.
Portland built a 3-1 lead as Brad Stewart singled in a pair of Pilot runs in the fourth and scored on Eric Hull's double. Gonzaga starter Scott Stencil (1-0) would settle down following the rough fourth inning and pitch a complete game for the Zags. Stencil struck out four and allowed only one hit over the final five innings of work.
Eric Rodland's two-run double in the top of the fifth inning knotted the score at 3-3 as Gonzaga chased Pilot starter Steve Chamberlain from the game. In the seventh inning the Bulldogs would take the lead as Greg Brooks walked and moved to third on a Danny Evans single. Brooks then scored on a Rodland sacrifice fly. Brian Munhall and Barry Matthews were hit by pitches to load the bases before Hertz greeted Pilot reliever Mike Padgett with a two-run single. Gonzaga would leave the bases loaded as Kevin Cave flew out to center.
Gonzaga added insurance runs in the top of the eighth with an RBI single by Munhall, followed by a Matthews RBI double. Matthews, Hertz and Evans each had two hits to lead the Zags offense.
Cory Lunde led Portland with two of the Pilots six hits. Reliever Kyle Corra (0-1) was tagged with the loss after loading the bases in the seventh inning.
