PASCO, Wash. - Washington State starting pitcher Justin Cayetano (1-0) scattered 6 hits during a complete game outing as the Cougars defeated Gonzaga 6-1 at Columbia Basin College in Pasco. The game was a make-up from a series previously snowed out in the Tri-Cities.
WSU scored all the runs they would need on the afternoon in the bottom of the third inning as Stefan Bailie drove home Mike Knight with a single to left field. Adrian Thomas would follow that with a RBI double to left-center off Gonzaga starter Ed Clelland (0-1). The Cougars would add insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on another RBI single by Thomas.
Gonzaga's lone run of the game would come in the ninth inning as the Zags attempted a late rally. Brian Munhall led off the inning with a double down the right line. Barry Matthews would single moving Munhall to third base. Cayetano then forced Kevin Richardson into a double-play allowing Munhall to score but killing the Zags rally.
Matthews led Gonzaga (2-5) going 3-for-4 at the plate while Bailie led Washington State (4-8) with a 3-for-3 afternoon. The two teams will resume play this weekend with a four-game series set for Walla Walla Community College. Game time for Friday's opener is at 1 p.m.
