Dons Send Baseball To Fourth Straight Loss

SAN FRANCISCO - San Francisco (12-10, 2-3 WCC) scored four runs in the sixth inning and added insurance runs in the seventh and eighth inning on Sunday afternoon as the Dons sent Gonzaga (7-11, 2-3 WCC) to its fourth straight defeat with a 10-6 win at Benedetti Diamond.
The Zags jumped on top early in the game as Brian Munhall connected for a 3-run homerun to left in the fifth inning. Gonzaga had scored two runs earlier in the game on a Kevin Cave sacrifice fly and Eric Rodland ground out RBI.
USF closed the gap to 6-4 in the fifth inning on a Taggert Bozied home run and Steve Booth sacrifice fly. San Francisco then scored the go ahead runs in the sixth against GU relief pitcher John Gonzalez (0-1). Nick Cirbo's home run ignited that USF run.
Chris Gossert (3-0) was able to shutdown the Gonzaga offense entering the game in the fifth inning. Gossert pitched 4.1 scoreless innings allowing only two hits.
Barry Matthews led the GU hitting attack with a 3-for-4 afternoon including an RBI double in the fifth. Bozied and Jesse Foppert led USF with 3-for-5 days.
The two teams will conclude the three game series on Monday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. Gonzaga will then open its home season on Wednesday with a 2:00 p.m. game against Whitworth at August/A.R.T. Stadium.
