SPOKANE, Wash. - Kevin Richardson went 4-for-5 at the plate driving home two runs as the Gonzaga Bulldogs (8-12) ended a five-game losing streak with a 7-0 win over Whitworth College (6-13) Wednesday afternoon at August/A.R.T. Stadium.
Richardson started his big day in the first inning as he singled home Eric Rodland after Rodland led off the inning with a single. That would prove to be all the offense the Zags would need as Errol Simonitsch (1-1) combined with three other Gonzaga pitchers for the 6-hit shutout. Simonitsch would work five scoreless innings for the win.
Gonzaga added some insurance runs in their half of the third when Jared Hertz send a 2-run home run out of the park. Nate Gold's RBI single in the 7th scored Richardson and ended Golds 2-hit afternoon. Richardson would end his 4-hit performance in the 8th with an RBI double that scored Garth Blumberg.
Barry Matthews and Hertz each finished with two hits to round out the Zags double-digit hitting attack. Aaron Keller was the lone Whitworth player with multiple hits finishing with 2. Whitworth starter Matt Neill was charged with the loss to drop to 1-1.
Gonzaga returns to action on Saturday afternoon when the open a West Coast Conference series against Santa Clara. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
