Gonzaga Moves Past Whitworth 5-1

SPOKANE, Wash. - Seven Gonzaga pitchers combined to limit Whitworth College (9-14) to just one run as the Zags (11-13) collected their second win over their cross-town neighbors in the last seven days. Brian Munhall went 3-for-3 to help guide Gonzaga to the 5-1 win at August/A.R.T. Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
Munhall opened the Zags two run second with a single to right field. After stealing second, Munhall scored on a RBI single by Jared Hertz that extended Hertz's hitting streak to 13 games. John Gebbers would drive home Hertz with the first of his two hits on the afternoon, staking the Bulldogs to an early 2-0 lead. Errol Simonitsch (2-1) pitched three strong innings for the Zags to collect his second win over the Pirates.
The Pirates scored their first run against Gonzaga in three years in the top of the fifth as Brandon Muzatko singled to left to start off the inning. After stealing second Muzatko would score on a Josh Taylor double to left.
The Zags would close out the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Kevin Cave walked and Barry Matthews singled to move Cave around the bases, Cave would score as the Pirates left-fielder misplayed the Matthews single. Munhall would then collect his second single of the game to score Matthews. Hertz would reach on a fielders choice and come around to score the final Gonzaga run on a balk with men on second and third.
Kevin Richardson extended his hitting streak to 17 games as the Zags prepare to jump back into WCC action this weekend with a three game set at Pepperdine. Matt Squires and Marquis Molett led Whitworth with two hits each. Whitworth starter Kent Hibbard (0-2) was tagged with the loss after pitching five innings.
