OKLAHOMA CITY - Gonzaga pounded out seven doubles including five during a six-run third inning as the Zags (18-18) split a two games series with Oklahoma State (30-12) by winning Wednesday's game 10-5 at Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City. Gonzaga returns to West Coast Conference action this Friday when the Zags open a three-game series against Saint Mary's at 3 p.m. at August/A.R.T. Stadium.
Oklahoma State jumped on the board first in the bottom of the second courtesy of a Luke Scott home run to right. Gonzaga responded in the third inning as John Gebbers opened the frame with a single to left. Eric Rodland, Brian Munhall and Barry Matthews all followed with doubles to give GU a 3-1 lead. After the Cowboys let an infield pop up drop behind second base, Nate Gold and Kevin Cave hit back-to-back doubles to round out the Zags scoring and stake them to a 6-1 lead.
The Cowboys closed the gap to 6-4 with two runs in the third and one more in the fourth against Gonzaga starter Scott Stencil. Rob Watson delivered a two-run home run in the third while Matt Oakes homered for OSU's run in the fourth. Sean Ingalls (1-1) would come in to relieve Stencil and pitched into the seventh allowing one run to pick up the win.
Gonzaga increased its advantage to 9-4 with three runs in the fifth. Kevin Richardson led off the inning with a home run to center. Gebbers hit a double and scored on a Danny Evans single down the left line. Rodland then tripled to score Evans. Gebbers second double of the game in the ninth scored Gold after Gold had reached on an infield error. Kyle Nearhood followed Ingalls to the mound and worked out of a bases loaded situation in the ninth to help Gonzaga move back to the .500 mark.
Gebbers and Rodland each finished with three hits for Gonzaga while Nebasett Brown, Scott and Oakes had three hits each for the Cowboys. Jimmy Rhodes (3-1) was tagged with the loss after giving up three runs in the third inning.
