Arizona State Puts Away Gonzaga 9-1

April 24, 2001

Box Score

TEMPE, Ariz. - Arizona State pitchers struck out 16 Gonzaga batters Tuesday night as the No. 15 Sun Devils (28-14-1) shutdown the Bulldogs (21-20) 9-1 at Packard Stadium.

The Sun Devils opened the first inning as Casey Myers singled up the middle to score Nick Walsh after Walsh drew a lead-off walk against GU starter Scott Stencil (2-3). Myers would be a factor again in the third inning as he beat out a double-play ball that would have ended the inning. Myers then advanced to second on an infield error and would come around to score the first of four unearned runs in the inning. Mike Lopez and Dennis Wyrick had RBI hits in the inning as the Zags committed three errors.

Arizona State starter Eric Doble (1-2) kept the Gonzaga offense in check during his five innings of work allowing three hits while striking out nine Bulldog batters. The Sun Devils added runs in the fourth on a Chris Duffy home run and in the fifth on a double by Wyrick and singles by Brooks Conrad and Steve Garrabrants.

Gonzaga finally broke through against the Arizona State bullpen as Barry Matthews and Kevin Richardson hit back-to-back doubles in the sixth. That would be all the offense ASU relief pitcher Andy Torres would allow as he set down four batters on strikes in his three innings of work. Franco Pezely closed out the ninth for Arizona State with three more strike outs.

John Gebbers finished with two of Gonzaga's six hits while Lopez finished 3-for-3 for Arizona State. The Zags will open a five-game homestand this Friday with a 3 p.m. game against San Francisco at August/A.R.T. Stadium.
