Box Score

SPOKANE, Wash. - In a game where hits were hard to come by sophomore Danny Evans had the biggest one of the day as he hit a two-out home run in the bottom of the seventh to lift Gonzaga (23-20, 14-9) to a 2-1 win over San Francisco (24-21, 10-13 WCC) Saturday afternoon at August/A.R.T. Stadium. The teams will conclude the three game series on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Gonzaga struck first in the bottom of the second inning as Nate Gold reached on an infield single. After moving to second on a sacrifice bunt by John Gebbers, Gold scored on a single to left by Kevin Cave. San Francisco answered in the top of the fourth inning as Taggert Bozied hit a solo home run to left field with two outs in the frame.

Gonzaga starter Sean Lichter (5-1) and San Francisco starter Kevin Rose (4-4) both looked strong in the game with Lichter pitching 8.2 innings and Rose answering with 7.2 good innings. Rose's lone mistake late in the game was to Evans who sent a two-strike, two-out ball just barely over the left field fence. Lichter would give up a hit to Jeramy Janz with two outs in the ninth before giving way to Eric Everson. Everson struck out Steve Booth to end the threat and pick up his third save of the season.

Janz was the only player on either team to get multiple hits as he went 2-for-4 for the Dons. The teams combined for 13 total hits with Gonzaga getting seven of those, the biggest Evans shot in the seventh. Gonzaga increases its Coast Division lead over San Francisco to four games and remains tied for first with Santa Clara. It was the eighth consecutive West Coast Conference win for the Bulldogs.
