SPOKANE, Wash. - Washington (25-15) and Gonzaga (24-21) combined for five home runs on a windy Tuesday afternoon at August/A.R.T. Stadium as the Huskies outlasted the Bulldogs 11-6 for the non-conference victory. Gonzaga next travels to Santa Clara for a three-game West Coast Conference series which could decide the Coast Division champion by weekend's end.
Gonzaga opened the scoring in the bottom of the first as Jared Hertz was hit by a pitch with bases loaded to give the Zags a 1-0 lead. Zack Daniels would work out of the first of many jams Husky pitchers would face as Washington pitchers stranded 12 Gonzaga runners on the bases. The Huskies struck back in the second with an RBI single by Duggan Moran. Moran would then contribute in the other Husky run of the inning as he swiped second in a double steal that allowed Tila Reynolds to steal home. Tyler Davidson's ground out in the third placed Washington up 3-1.
After a two-run Davidson homer in the fifth put Washington up 5-2, Gonzaga closed the gap to 5-4 as Hertz hammered a ball over the right center fence for a two-run home run. The Zags then took the lead 6-5 in the sixth as Eric Rodland hit a two-run home run to left field. Washington countered in the seventh as Moran put the Huskies up 7-6 with a two-run home run to right against Gonzaga relief pitcher Sean Ingalls (1-2). Washington added four more runs in the eighth, the biggest hit a two RBI double by Davidson as the right fielder drove home five runs on the afternoon.
Randy Vanderplow (2-1) would pick up the win for Washington as Moran led the way with a 3-for-5 afternoon. Gonzaga was led by Rodland, Hertz and John Gebbers all with two hits.
