May 12, 2001

Box Score

SPOKANE, Wash. - Loyola Marymount scored three runs in the fourth and added two more in the fifth Saturday afternoon as the Lions (20-37, 7-22 WCC) continued to play the role of spoiler with a 10-6 win over Gonzaga (26-24, 17-12 WCC) at August/A.R.T. Stadium.

The Lions took advantage of some early wildness by Gonzaga starter Sean Lichter (6-2) to score two runs in the first inning. Lichter walked two batters and hit two more Lions before Jeff Walker singled to left field. Gonzaga quickly answered in the bottom of the inning with two runs as Barry Matthews and Jared Hertz had RBI singles.

LMU added a single run in the third on the first to two Tommy Perez home runs to lead 3-2. Kris Zacuto hit his fourth home run of the weekend in the fourth to lead 6-2. Brian Barton added two more runs in the fifth with a two-run home run to left.

Loyola Marymount starter Vincent Cordova (3-4) worked into the eighth inning, not allowing a hit after the first inning until Eric Rodland singled up the middle with two outs in the seventh. The Zags would tag four runs on Cordova in the eighth as Hertz connected for a two-run home run and Rodland singled home two more runs. LMU had added two insurance runs in their half of the eighth on a Perez two-run home run.

Perez finished the day 4-for-4 with four RBI's while Billy Lockin and Joshua Whitesell each had two hits. Rodland, Matthews and Hertz all had two hits for Gonzaga with Hertz adding three RBI's.

Gonzaga needs a win on Sunday afternoon to clinch its first WCC Coast Division title after Santa Clara moved into a first-place tie with the Zags by virtue of a win over San Francisco Saturday afternoon. Should the Broncos lose or both teams have the same outcome on Sunday, Gonzaga will win the division title with a 4-2 tie breaker advantage over the Broncos.
