Matthews Signs With Detroit Tigers

SPOKANE, Wash. - Just a week after finished his collegiate career with a 5-for-5 performance in the West Coast Conference Championship game Barry Matthews has signed a professional baseball contract with the Detroit Tigers. Matthews will report to the High-A Lakeland Tigers of the Florida State League sometime in the next two weeks to start his professional career. Matthews completed his collegiate career at Gonzaga ranking in the career Top 10 in several hitting and pitching categories including wins, strikeouts, complete games, doubles, home runs and runs batted in. A two-time first-team All-WCC selection, Matthews led the Gonzaga team with a .348 average while posting a 9-2 record on the mound this season.
Matthews will join former Gonzaga outfielder Jason Bay as Bulldogs currently playing in the Florida State League. Bay is currently with the Jupiter Hammerheads, an affiliate of the Montreal Expos. Other former Bulldogs currently playing professional baseball include -- Mike Redmond (Florida Marlins), Scott Morgan (Triple AAA - Anaheim Angels), Bo Hart (Single A - St. Louis Cardinals), Steve Bennett (Single A - New York Mets) and George Arnott (Northern League - Independent League).
