Matthews Earns Third-Team All-America Honors

SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University baseball standout Barry Matthews earned his second All-America award of the season as he was named a third-team selection by Baseball America on Wednesday. Matthews recently started his professional career with the Detroit Tigers after leading the Bulldogs to the West Coast Conference Coast Division title this season. The Northridge, CA, native finished the season leading the Zags with a .348 average while hitting ten home runs with 33 RBI's. On the mound Matthews ranked among the WCC leaders compiling a 9-2 record with a 3.23 earned run average and 83 strike outs. Earlier this month Matthews was named a second team All-America selection by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. He joins Darin Blood (1995) as Gonzaga's most recent baseball All-America selections.
The West Coast Conference was also represented with two Pepperdine players earning All-America honors. Pitcher Noah Lowry was a first-team honoree while pitcher Dan Haren earned second team honors.
