SPOKANE, Wash. - Senior right-handed pitcher David Hixson was the lone Gonzaga University player taken in this year's amateur baseball draft, going in the 28th round to the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday.
Hixson, a 6-1, 195-pounder from Vancouver, Wash., was 5-8 with a 4.04 ERA for Gonzaga this spring. He appeared in 20 games, 12 of them in relief. He pitched 64.2 innings, walked 14 and struck out 44.
Senior pitcher Barry Matthews signed a free-agent contract with the Detroit Tigers last week.
Gonzaga went 28-27 and won the Coast Division of the West Coast Conference, losing the best-of-three WCC Championship to Pepperdine University 2-1.
