Two Zags Earn Freshmen All-America Honors

SPOKANE, Wash. - For the second consecutive year the Gonzaga University baseball team has placed people on the Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-America team released by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. Eric Everson and Errol Simonitsch both earned honorable mention recognition as they helped guide Gonzaga to its first-ever West Coast Conference Division title this season.
Everson, a right-handed relief pitcher from Spokane, worked his way into the team's closer role midway through the 2001 season. He finished with a team high five saves while posting an 0-1 record. He struck out 30 batters in just 24 innings of work finishing the season with a 3.75 earned run average.
Simonitsch, a left-handed starting pitcher from Glendale, CA, led the Gonzaga team in earned run average at 2.80 during his ten appearances on the season. The freshman was 2-2 with six starts including a pitching in games against both Arizona State and Oklahoma State this season.
Everson and Simonitsch join current Zags second baseman Eric Rodland as Gonzaga players earning honorable mention All-America accolades over the past two seasons.
