EUGENE, Ore. - The Gonzaga University women's soccer team dropped its season opener to the University of Oregon Ducks 1-0 Friday.
The Bulldogs defense held off the Ducks until the 85th minute when Nicole Garbin scored the winning goal. Garbin ran down a 70-yard boot by goalkeeper Sarah Peters and fired a shot past Gonzaga goalie Brooke Longacre that landed in the right side of the net. Longacre racked up six saves in the second half after replacing goalkeeper Tara Curtis two minutes into the second half. Curtis left the game with two saves.
Sophomore Kelly Leffel led the Zags with three shots followed by Katie O'Brien who had a pair. Kristine Wirtjes, Walker Loseno and Natalie Hardin each chimed with a shot apiece as Gonzaga tallied eight shots. Oregon held a 30-8 shots advantage, including 21-4 in the second half.
Gonzaga continues its two-match swing through Oregon on Sunday when the Bulldogs meet Portland State University at 1 p.m. at Tigard High. The game will be televised tape-delayed at 7:30 p.m. Sunday on the new Action Sports Network. Most Oregon cable subscribers receive the channel and those with satellite service can find ASN at the coordinate GE 2, transponder 7.
